The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has significantly tightened the nation’s food safety ecosystem during the fiscal year 2025-26. Through a coordinated effort with State and Union Territory governments, the regulator has transitioned from a purely advisory role to an intensive, enforcement-led strategy to curb food adulteration and ensure compliance across the supply chain.
This aggressive push comes in response to evolving challenges in the food sector, including the rapid growth of e-commerce and the increasing complexity of globalized food production.
Key Pillars of the FY 2025-26 Enforcement Drive:
Unprecedented Surveillance: State authorities have conducted a record number of inspections and surveillance samples, focusing specifically on high-risk categories such as milk and milk products, edible oils, and spices.
Mobile Food Testing Units: The deployment of ‘Food Safety on Wheels’ mobile labs has been scaled up to provide on-the-spot testing capabilities in rural and semi-urban areas.
Digital Integration: FSSAI has enhanced its FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) portal to streamline licensing, registration, and the tracking of enforcement actions in real-time.
Laboratory Infrastructure: Significant investments have been made to upgrade state food laboratories to meet international testing standards, ensuring more accurate and faster detection of contaminants.
Consumer Awareness: Alongside enforcement, the ‘Eat Right India’ movement has been intensified to educate consumers on identifying safe and fortified food products.
The intensified drive has led to a marked increase in the identification of non-compliant Food Business Operators (FBOs). Penalties and legal proceedings have been fast-tracked to serve as a deterrent against the sale of sub-standard or misbranded food items. FSSAI officials emphasize that this proactive stance is essential for maintaining public health and building global trust in the ‘Made in India’ food brand.
