Launch of ‘Healthy and Hygienic Food Streets’ in 6 Major Districts
Recognizing that a vast majority of the public relies on street food vendors daily, the state government is introducing a model pilot project: the Healthy and Hygienic Food Street initiative.
The program will kick off in six major districts:
Chennai
Trichy
Madurai
Salem
Coimbatore
Tiruppur
Under this scheme, specific food streets will be selected and modernized to meet strict hygienic standards. To help low-income vendors adapt to these new regulations, the government will provide financial assistance and subsidized loan facilities to cover initial infrastructure upgrade expenses.
Mandatory Typhoid Vaccines for Restaurant and Street Food Handlers
To eliminate the transmission of infectious diseases through eateries, the Tamil Nadu Food Safety Department is introducing a proactive immunization program All individuals classified as “food handlers”—including chefs, kitchen staff, and service personnel at both high-end hotels and street side stalls—will be monitored. The government is planning to roll out state-sponsored typhoid vaccine drives for these workers, with an official announcement expected to be released shortly
Transparent Administration and Guidelines for Inspections
Addressing complaints regarding occasional vendor harassment by inspection staff, the Minister emphasized that the government has a zero-tolerance policy for corruption . “Following the guidelines of the Honorable Chief Minister, our goal is to provide a transparent, honest, and graft-free administration,” the Minister stated . He instructed officers to enforce the Food Safety and Standards Act strictly but ethically, ensuring no unnecessary hardships are caused to small-scale businesses.
Furthermore, responding to concerns that high-end or star-rated hotels evade scrutiny, the Minister clarified that regular inspections are mandated by law across all sectors. However, because of existing protocols that restrict media presence during active field raids, these routines often go unpublicized .
Crackdown on Fraudulent YouTube Food Reviewers
With the massive surge of social media influencers in the culinary space, the department addressed growing complaints against dishonest digital content creators . While acknowledging that many online food reviewers act sincerely, the Minister highlighted that some influencers misguide the public by promoting unhygienic eateries in exchange for commercial benefits or alternative considerations . The state government is currently deliberating legal measures to regulate unfair promotions and hold misleading YouTube food reviewers accountable for compromising public awareness.
Public Information Transparency
To keep citizens informed, the Health Ministry confirmed that monthly consolidation reports—detailing the exact number of raids conducted, food samples tested, and subsequent penalties issued—will be regularly updated for public review
